(Combined Virginia Campaign Update: Through the first three weeks of the campaign, Virginia Tech has raised $35,253, which is 17 percent of the $210,000 goal. Below is some information describing how CVC funding addresses situations in the New River Valley.)
FACT
An estimated 20,000 people in the New River Valley do not have access to health care, and cannot afford medications. The Free Clinic of the NRV patient list has more than doubled in the past five years.
RESPONSE
Last year, the Free Clinic of the NRV provided medical care to 1,104 persons and the Program For Special Medical Care served 450 persons.
FACT
Approximately 12 percent of residents in Montgomery County live in substandard housing, and last year 233 persons requested emergency shelter in the New River Valley.
RESPONSE
Last year, Habitat for Humanity served eight families, the Montgomery County Community Shelter served 41 families, and VMH-Emergency Home repair served 50 families in Montgomery County, Floyd County, and Radford.
