Provost Outlines Merger Process
By Sandy Broughton
Spectrum Volume 18 Issue 16 - December 14, 1995
In a meeting with the College of Education Faculty Executive Committee Tuesday, Nov. 28, Provost Peggy Meszaros outlined the process by which Education will be merged with an existing college.
President Paul Torgersen announced November 8 in a letter to the College of Education faculty and staff his decision to suspend the dean's search and integrate Education into another college. He asked that the provost study the implementation of the decision and report to him no later than Jan. 15, 1996.
Meszaros will appoint a committee of 14 to assist her. The merger committee will be composed of the deans of the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Human Resources, and Education; two faculty members and one staff member from each of the three colleges; the director of the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching; and the vice president for Information Systems.
Recognizing the short time frame and the added complications of holiday absences, Meszaros said the committee will meet two or even three times a week during the first three weeks in December to complete their proposal for a merger plan. The committee will make its recommendation to the provost, who will in turn make a recommendation to the president by January 15.
Torgersen has stated that the administrative change will not involve reduction of the faculty or staff, nor will it involve termination of degree programs.
After its meeting with Meszaros, the College of Education Faculty Executive Committee voted unanimously to recommend to the merger committee that 1) Education be allowed to remain together as a unit and 2) Education be allowed to continue implementation of the restructuring plan approved by the Board of Visitors on Nov. 14, 1994.
