CALS employees honored

Spectrum Volume 18 Issue 16 - December 14, 1995

Lois B. Wade and Judy H. Fielder have been honored by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences this fall as outstanding classified staff employees. The honors are part of CALS's ongoing program to recognize the contributions of staff employees to the college's success.

Fielder and Wade each received the Outstanding Employee of the Month award, which is presented to a college staff member who has made exceptional contributions to his/her department and to the college. An office-services specialist in the Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology, and Weed Science, Fielder is currently vice president of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Staff Association and chair of the Classified Staff Affairs Committee. She has also served two years on the Staff Steering Committee.

As an employee of PPWS for 17 years, Fielder provides administrative support for the faculty, staff, and students housed at two campus locations.

Among her responsibilities are the administration of more than 30 Virginia Tech Foundation accounts, leave reports for 53 faculty and staff members, and day-to-day administrative requests by the faculty, staff, and students.

Fielder's nomination describes her as being "exceptionally prompt, efficient and accurate, often going above and beyond the call of duty and routinely exceeding expectations. Her overall contributions to the college and university are commendable and fully deserving of this employee-recognition award."

Wade, program-support technician for the Virginia Tech Chemical, Drug, and Pesticide Unit for 14 years, was named the college's employee of the month for September.

Wade manages the unit office as well as administering one of the busiest Pesticide Applicator Testing Centers in the state. Her responsibilities include answering thousands of inquiries annually from Extension agents and clients concerning federal and state pesticide regulations, support of pesticide training sessions, maintenance of resources required for applicator training, administering exams locally, and maintaining current information on pesticide laws.

She has received numerous accolades from clients and colleagues regarding her superior work ethic and her willingness to be of assistance.

Wade has served as president and treasurer of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Support Staff Association (VCESSA). For the past two years, she has been the VCESSA representative to the College Classified Staff Association where she assisted the organization with special projects in support of the Montgomery County Community Shelter. She also served as a member of the University Parking and Transportation Committee.
