Virginia Tech Staff Appreciation Day featuring CommonHealth May 16, 1996

Spectrum Volume 18 Issue 30 - May 2, 1996

By declaration of President Paul Torgersen, May 16 has been set aside for the university community to celebrate the contributions of Virginia Tech's staff members and to say "Thank You!"

TIME AND LOCATION: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Rector Fieldhouse and on the Practice Field.

Classified staff and wage employees will be excused from usual duties for all or a large part of these hours so they can participate. Please report to your usual work location at your normally scheduled time and return there at 3 p.m. (See map for detailed activity layout.)

FOOD: A free picnic lunch will be served continuously from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Do you like choices for lunch? Then you will be happy with the selection which ranges from hamburgers and hot dogs to grilled chicken breasts. There's something for every taste with a wider selection of heart-healthy foods in addition to the regular menu. If you prefer to eat low fat, try having a grilled chicken sandwich, baked beans, fresh fruit and frozen yogurt.

FUN: Come join your fellow employees and take a fitness walk or do group aerobics. Either way, you'll have fun and do your body good. For your convenience, you can participate in either a walk or aerobics at 10:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. For either event, please come to the Practice Field. Everyone who exercises will receive a special CommonHealth gift incentive for participating.

While you enjoy lunch, come watch and cheer on your fellow employees participating in fun relays such as the balloon-buster relay. When's the last time you tried to run or hop with a balloon between your knees? The relays will begin with a parade of teams at 12:20 p.m. on the Practice Field.

Also, a volleyball set and horseshoe pits will be set up for you and your friends to enjoy at your leisure.

In addition to all the fun and games, please come to the Fieldhouse to hear the live band that has become an annual favorite. Join in a line dance, sing along, or just enjoy the music.

MEMENTOS: Stop by the CommonHealth booths inside Rector Fieldhouse for information. Everyone who stops by a booth will receive EITHER a Hokie Frisbee or book buddy.

HELPFUL HINTS: Wear casual, picnic clothes, work uniforms or whatever will be easiest and most comfortable. Bring folding lawn chairs, a blanket, or whatever you like to sit on. Note: We ask that you not take folding lawn chairs onto the Practice Field. Be sure to bring your sun screen, hats and visors, etc.

PARKING: We suggest that you park either in the Commuter Parking Lot on Stadium Road or in the Litton-Reaves Parking Lot behind Litton-Reaves. No parking is available at Rector Fieldhouse with the exception of handicapped parking. On your walk from the parking lots take a detour through the Horticulture Gardens--they're beautiful this time of year.

RAIN PLAN FOR COMMONHEALTH ACTIVITIES: In case of inclement weather, relays and group aerobics will be held in the Fieldhouse. Group aerobics will be held at 10:30 a.m. only, and team relays will begin at 12:20 p.m. as planned.
