UUSA, rec sports restructuring

Spectrum Volume 18 Issue 32 - May 30, 1996

In an effort to provide more efficient management in both recreational sports and UUSA (University Unions and Student Activities), a restructuring of several administrative positions is currently under way. William W. Campion, formerly associate director of UUSA, has been named director of recreational sports. Clarresa Morton, currently assistant director of UUSA for event planning, will be associate director of UUSA, effective July 1. This restructuring is being accomplished with no increase in administrative positions.

Campion has served as acting director of recreational sports since May of 1995. He holds the MBA degree from Syracuse University and has been with Virginia Tech since 1980. He chaired a university committee to study the recreational needs of Virginia Tech in 1987 and has been involved in recreational issues (particularly the funding of extramural sport clubs) for a number of years. He has extensive background in building operations, business management, policy development, and finance.

Morton will continue to be responsible for event planning and will add responsibility for Squires building operations, Johnston Student Center, leisure services, and the Squires Ticket Office.

Morton has served as assistant director of UUSA since 1989. She holds a master's from Virginia Tech in higher-education administration and is currently a doctoral candidate at Virginia Tech. Morton came to the university with extensive accounting and management experience in the hospitality industry. In her new, expanded role she will continue to lead UUSA's efforts to provide quality customer service in the planning and support of events.

Another assistant director position, currently held by Timothy Reed (who has resigned effective May 31 to complete his doctoral study full-time) will be redefined as associate director for student activities and a search is under way to fill this position.
