Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center (DBHCC). Managing Director. Managing director of the on-campus DBHCC, with a projected starting date ofJuly 1, 1997. The managing director is responsible for the lodging and foodoperations, meeting and technical services, marketing, special events, andgeneral budgeting and administration of the 125 lodging room and conferencecenter with 10 meeting rooms and 15,000 square feet of meeting/banquet space.Responsibilities: The managing director has overall responsibility for theefficient and effective management of the facility and personnel; the provisionof outstanding customer service; management of employees engaged in thelodging, food and beverage, sales and catering (including the details ofplanning, decorating, entertainment, and refined arrangements for foodfunctions and special restaurant, banquet, and catering events), and conferenceoperations for continuing education programs, special events, universityadministrative functions, and other major activities; and for insuring that allservices are rendered in support of the university's educational mission.Special emphasis is placed on marketing and sales to support the hotel. Forthese DBHCC responsibilities, the managing director reports to the director ofContinuing Education. The managing director also teaches a senior-level coursein lodging management and, as such, has the following additionalresponsibilities as a faculty member in the Hospitality and Tourism ManagementDepartment within the College of Human Resources and Education: serving ondepartmental committees, student advising, and public service. For theseacademic responsibilities, the managing director reports to the departmenthead, hospitality and tourism management. Agentsmust determine program needs by monitoring trends and issues, involvingExtension leadership councils and advisory committees; design programs to meetneeds of target audience, specify program goals and objectives, identifyresources; inform clientele of program activities; use appropriate technologiesto plan and deliver program through workshops, seminars, conferences,one-on-one visits, on-farm demonstrations, field trips and tours; maintainknowledge of current research information; develop computer applications;develop and implement evaluation plan; recruit and utilize volunteers; andreport results to clientele, public, and decision-makers. Qualifications:Master's degree required or imminent in related discipline. Current VirginiaCooperative Extension faculty members with bachelor's degree may be consideredbased on specialty, expertise, and performance. Ability to communicateeffectively, orally and in writing; experience in relating with people.Experience in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educationprograms in appropriate discipline. Ability to recruit, train, and managevolunteers. Computer/computer software knowledge desired.
