Recreational Sports. Coordinator of Fitness Development. Twelve-month professional staff position. The coordinator of Fitness Development oversees the effective delivery of a comprehensive program of aerobic/fitness activity at Virginia Tech. Included within the scope of aerobic/fitness is the development of classes and instruction in land and water aerobics, the management of the strength training and cardiovascular areas of War Memorial Gym, the design and delivery of specialized fitness programs, supervision of student staff, and budget planning and execution. The coordinator will assist the director in planning for the opening of a new campus Student Health and Fitness Center with construction scheduled for completion in fall 1998.Qualifications: master's degree in sports administration, recreation, physical education, or related field; two or more years of graduate or professional experience in a recreation or fitness setting; experience in fitness programming in aerobics and proper use and management of cardiovascular and weight training equipment; must possess or be capable of attaining necessary aerobic/fitness certification; good interpersonal skills required; and computer experience in an IBM environment desired. Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Director for the Center of the Study of Science in Society and the Science and Technology Studies Graduate Program. The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS), in cooperation with the departments of history, philosophy, and sociology, is seeking a director for the Center of the Study of Science in Society (CSSS) and the Science and Technology Studies (STS) graduate program. CSSS is a component unit of CIS, and the STS program is a cooperative venture of CSSS and the three departments listed above. Under current arrangements, the director of CSSS serves as director of the STS program. As such, s/he is responsible for carrying out administrative work connected with the recruitment, evaluation, and retention of graduate students; supervising the advertising of the program; preparing grant applications on behalf of the program; and overseeing the development of the STS program and its various allied research interests and projects. S/hewill chair the Graduate Committee of CIS. The director of CSSS is also responsible for administering and supervising the Humanities, Science and Technology (HST) undergraduate program. S/he will serve as a member of the Steering Committee of CIS, help coordinate work among CIS programs, and assist in the development of cooperative initiatives within CIS and with other units in the university. The position is a calendar-year position (although this maybe open for negotiation) with the expectation of a three-year appointment. This appointment could commence as early as July 1, 1997, but no later than Aug. 15,1997. The appointment can be renewed for a term of up to three years. To be eligible to apply for this position, an individual must be on the faculty of Virginia Tech and a tenured member of CSSS or one of the three departments co-responsible for the STS graduate program (that is, history, philosophy, and sociology). In the case of individuals in those departments, appointment to the directorship will entail a term membership in CIS. In such cases the appointment will be contingent on completion of arrangements with the home department. Applicants should provide the search committee with a curriculum vitae; a statement describing their vision and goals for the CSS, STS, and HST programs; a brief account of their administrative philosophy and a description of any administrative experience; and a sample publication. Athletic Department. Assistant Men's and Women's Swimming Coach. The department is seeking applications for a full-time, 12-month position for a highly competitive Division I Program. Responsibilities include, under direction of head coach, but are not limited to on-deck coaching, recruiting prospect student athletes, fund raising, and administrative duties in order to accomplish the goals and objections of the swim team. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree, strong communication and interpersonal communication skills, and a thorough knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
