James E. Turner Jr., a senior executive with General Dynamics Corp., was named rector of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

Turner, executive vice president of General Dynamics' Marine Group, begins his term as rector July 1. The Marine Group is located at General Dynamics corporate headquarters in Falls Church. Turner succeeds Henry J. Dekker of Blacksburg, whose term on the board expires June 30.

Joseph R. Jenkins of Richmond was named vice rector of the board. Jenkins, who graduated from the Pamplin College of Business in 1970 with a degree in accounting, is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Heilig-Myers furniture company.

Turner graduated with honors from Virginia Tech's College of Engineering in 1956. Before his current position, Turner was executive vice president of General Dynamics Corp. and president of its Electric Boat Division in Groton, Conn.

A member of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Committee of 100, Turner also serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Foundation.

He has been a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Society of Naval Engineers, and the World Board of Governors of the U.S.O., chairing the Human Resource Committee.

Turner was appointed to a four-year term on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors by Gov. George Allen Jan. 1, 1994.
