Self study making steady progress

By W. David Conn, University

Self-Study director

Spectrum Volume 19 Issue 30 - May 1, 1997

During the semester that is now drawing to a close, progress has been made in both components of the self study which is required for reaffirmation of the university's accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In the Institutional-Effectiveness component, responses to the 500 or so "must statements" (accreditation criteria) have been drafted and reviewed for completeness and accuracy by designated senior administrators and by appropriate university commissions and committees.

In the Strategic component that focuses on the impact of information technology on Virginia Tech's learning environment, four subcommittees are currently working to meet a May 1 deadline for submitting preliminary draft reports to the steering committee.

In turn, the Steering Committee expects to release its overall preliminary draft report by June 1. Access to the draft products of both components will be provided on the web at http://www.vt.edu:10021/admin/provost/selfstudy/ . Notification will be given via Spectrum and other channels once the postings have been made.

Members of the university community will be encouraged to review the materials and provide feedback electronically or by other means. In addition, meetings will be held at the beginning of the fall semester to provide a further opportunity for discussion and feedback. The final report is due to be completed by the end of the calendar year.
