Department of Mechanical Engineering . Assistant Professors. Entry level, tenure-track faculty positions for employment beginning in August 1998. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the teaching and research missions of the department. While applicant(s) with outstanding records in mechanical engineering will be considered, preference will be given for demonstrated expertise in energy systems, turbomachinery/propulsion, design methodology, structural dynamics, smart structures, MEMS, and tribology/materials science. Evidence of involvement in relevant research activities is required. Interest in interdisciplinary activities and relevant postdoctoral experience are preferred. The department currently has 38 full-time faculty members, awards 180 BS degrees each year, has 180 graduate students, and conducts a funded research program of over $5,000,000 per year. Department of Materials Science and Engineering . Assistant Professor. Tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. Each application should have an earned doctorate in an appropriate field of science or engineering. The ideal candidate will teach materials-related undergraduate and graduate courses and develop a research program broadly based in materials science and engineering with some interest which targets biomedical engineering. These objectives can be achieved both as an individual and in collaboration with other faculty members at Virginia Tech. Identified needs at the departmental level include structure/property relationships in metal and ceramics, environmental influences on materials such a corrosion, materials processing, and fabrication. Other area will also be considered. Virginia Tech has a College of Veterinary Medicine with appropriate clinical research facilities on campus as well as links to medical colleges in Virginia. Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology . Clinical Instructor. Clinical instructor in veterinary clinical pathology. This is a one-year position with responsibilities primarily in diagnostic clinical pathology service (exfoliative cytology, hematology, and clinical chemistry) and some instruction of residents and DVM students. Participation in weekly slide seminars and journal clubs will be expected. The position requires a DVM or equivalent degree and post-graduate training in clinical pathology, with preference for diplomates of the ACVP or those who are board-eligible. Department of Architecture . Assistant Professor . Full-time, tenure-track position. The position will be based at the college's Washington-Alexandria Center and will include collaborative research, teaching, and public-service opportunities with the main campus in Blacksburg. The Alexandria Center functions as an urban extension of the college and leads a consortium of six universities from the U.S., Germany, Japan, and England. Participating schools each send students to the center for study. Visiting lecturers and adjunct faculty members enrich the consortium as do ongoing collaborations with the Smithsonian Institution and the National Building Museum The center is ideally located to utilize the full resources of the local architectural community and the cultural and governmental resources of the Washington/Baltimore Metropolitan Area. Teaching responsibilities will include upper-year undergraduate and graduate design studios and related courses in design/tectonics as well as support of the college-wide doctoral program in environmental design and planning. To be considered, applicants must have a master's degree in architecture or the equivalent in a related field; individuals with architectural registration and/or doctoral degree are encouraged to apply. Department of Civil Engineering . Assistant/Associate Professor . Tenure-track position in civil engineering measurements and GIS applications. Begins fall semester 1998. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in civil engineering or related field and a record of excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship. The successful candidate will have instructional responsibilities in the areas of surveying, GIS, and GPS. Candidates having industrial/government experience and/or additional capabilities in remote sensing, advanced surveying, and other civil-engineering disciplines (construction, environmental, geotechnical, hydrosystems, transportation) are encouraged to apply. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a program of funded research and graduate study in collaboration with other faculty members in the department and across campus. In addition to active GIS projects in CE,a new multi-discipline NASA project to upgrade remote-sensing equipment on campus is being administered by the geography and forestry departments. Responsibilities include completing scientific and technical client projects and assisting with business research.
