Instructional Department of Food Science and Technology. Research Associate. Full-time position available in the Department of Food Science and Technology to participate in research and Extension activities of the Dairy Foods Research Group. The research program investigates problems relevant to the Virginia Dairy processing industry. B.S. degree required, M.S. preferred in the area of food science, microbiology, dairy science, or chemistry. Special consideration will be given to people with dairy experience. Successful candidate must be willing to travel in Virginia to dairy processing facilities and help instruct short courses and workshops. Good oral and written communication skills are essential. The Bradley Department Of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Senior Faculty Position. In computer networks. The department seeks an energetic faculty member with international stature to help establish and lead a networking research activity at Virginia Tech's new Northern Virginia Research Institute. The institute is to be located in historic Alexandria, in the heart of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. This region has the world's largest concentration of telecommunications professionals and is the home of numerous corporations and federal agencies involved with telecommunications, networking, information technology, and the Internet. The new research institute will build on existing facilities, including Net.Work.Virginia, a state-wide ATM network, the new $25-million Advanced Communications and Information Technology Center at Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg, and, for teaching, Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Graduate Center in Falls Church. The new networking research activity will complement current centers of excellence in information technology within the ECE Department, including the Center for Wireless Telecommunications, the Virginia Tech Information Systems Center, and the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group. Significant seed funding for equipment, additional faculty positions, and other support will be available to develop the institute and its research programs. This senior position carries the possibility of a named professorship for a suitably qualified candidate. Department of Chemistry. Director of the Chemistry Learning Center. This position will be a 12-month, non-tenure-track appointment (at the instructor level); the initial appointment begins on July 1, 1998 and is for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The newly established Chemistry Learning Center is designed to enhance student success in undergraduate chemistry courses, particularly targeting general chemistry. The department seeks an active chemistry educator with expertise in computer-assisted methods. The director will manage the Chemistry Learning Center. The anticipated duties are: serving as a resource person for students, GTA's, and faculty members; evaluating and implementing computer-assisted methods; teaching one section of general chemistry per semester; and other center-related activities. Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate and graduate food-engineering courses for engineering and food-science students at the main campus of Virginia Tech. Conduct fundamental and applied research in food-process engineering. Successful candidate will be expected to develop innovative teaching and internationally prominent research programs. This 12-month, tenure-track position provides substantial collaborative and interdisciplinary opportunities with the departments of food science and technology, chemical engineering, and the newly established Biotechnology Center.
