Sunday, March 15, will see the start of the long-awaited site visit of the committee that will examine whether Virginia Tech should have its regional accreditation reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Simultaneously, another committee will conduct a certification review for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Both committees will be based in the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, but will move around campus as they examine documentation and seek out members of the university community to ask questions.
Team members are mostly volunteers from other universities. We hope that everyone will be as welcoming and cooperative as possible. Two additional individuals have been added to the SACS compliance team since its membership was published in Spectrum on January 22. This team will conduct an audit of our compliance document entitled "Affirming Institutional Progress." They are G. David Huffman, professor of engineering, University of Southern Mississippi (Section IV: distance learning; continuing education, outreach, and service; academic programs--professional); and James D. Bowman, vice president for business and finance, East Tennessee State University (Section VI: financial resources; physical resources; externally funded grants; related corporate entities).
Members of the SACS consulting team, who will give suggestions and guidance in relation to our strategic self-study report entitled "Transforming Virginia Tech for the Information Age," are Michael J. Hannafin, director, Learning and Performance Support Laboratory, and Wheatley-Georgia Research Alliance chair in technology-enhanced learning, University of Georgia; Fred Hurst, executive director, Florida Public Post-Secondary Distance Learning Institute; H. David Lambert, vice president, Georgetown University (formerly at Cornell University); and Carol A. Twigg, vice president, Educom.
