FACULTY POSITIONS

INSTRUCTIONAL
The Division of Engineering Fundamentals. Assistant Professor . Tenure-track appointment is for nine months (academic year) beginning August 1998. Duties are devoted primarily to advising freshman engineering students and developing and teaching courses in basic engineering subjects, to include engineering problem solving, computer applications/programming, engineering design, and engineering/computer graphics. Some summer teaching and/or advising may be available. Graduate degree in engineering and a strong command of the English language required. Previous industrial and/or teaching/advising experience, especially freshman courses, at the university level preferred. Center for Transportation Research. Electrical Engineer (Research Associate) . The Virginia Tech Center for Transportation Research has an opening for a research associate. The successful candidate will possess a degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or a closely related field, and extensive experience. Candidates should have the ability to implement a project from start to finish, and a demonstrated ability for independent and innovative design and problem solving. Strong computer-software skills and machine-shop experience are required. Position will involve electronic and mechanical fabrication using robust design and fabrication techniques. A strong background in vehicle instrumentation and data collection is highly desirable, as is experience in or familiarity with transportation research. Preference will be given to candidates who have shown ingenuity and creativity in previous work. Applications must be received by 8-31-98. Center for Transportation Research . Technical Operations Director . This position will develop new and innovative hardware and software solutions in support of a broad array of research programs using the Smart Road and CTR vehicle fleet; supervise as many as 12 engineers and technicians; and be responsible for all aspects of technical operations within the CTR, including the CTR's instrumented vehicle fleet, miniaturized portable data-collection system development and installation, systems administration, and all Smart Road subsystems including all-weather testing equipment, fiber optics and wireless data communications, pavement sensors, and variable lighting hardware. The successful candidate will possess 1) a minimum of five years supervisory experience 2) a BS in EE, ME, or closely related field 3) working knowledge of C, C++, Assembler, micro-controllers, mechanical design/fabrications, and experience with Silicon Graphics machines 4) 10 years experience in electronic/software system design and problem solving 5) a demonstrated ability to develop new and innovative hardware and software solutions in support of a broad array of research initiatives. Experience performing research support in a university research environment is highly desirable, as is a Class A CDL. Vice Provost for Research/Dean of the Graduate School. Director for Federal Agency Relations . This position works with faculty members, department heads, center directors, deans, and research administration to enhance federal funding for sponsored projects. This position reports to the vice provost for research/dean of the Graduate School and works closely with the associate provost for interdisciplinary programs, associate provost for program development, and director of sponsored programs and their staffs in Research and Graduate Studies. The principal functions of this position include: 1) Developing working relationships with key staff members of the federal agencies to identify opportunities for sponsored program support at the federal agencies, especially NIH, NSF, DOE, DOD, USDA, NASA, DOEd, EPA, NIST, and others. 2) Coordinating with staff members in the colleges, centers, and Research and Graduate Studies to link faculty members with program officers at the federal agencies. 3) Establishing relations through NASULGC, the Science Coalition, and similar organizations to broaden Virginia Tech's networks in the federal agencies. 4) Developing systems to link faculty members with the agencies and program officers very early in the development of new programs at the federal level. 5) Analyzing and interpreting federal funding trends to maximize understanding of the opportunities for the faculty. The successful individual must be knowledgeable of faculty members and their interests and expertise, possess excellent interpersonal skills, be willing and able to identify and initiate new opportunities for the faculty, and coordinate closely with the research administration at all levels in the university. This position is in the A/P series with salary in the $50,000-$75,000 range, depending on the qualifications and previous experience in this or related areas.
