- CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION:
*****************************************************************
James E. Smith, confronted by a sheriff and a deputy with a
warrant for his arrest on charges that he killed his estranged wife,
first tried to take his own life by stabbing himself. When that
failed, he charged at the law officers, who opened fire, killing
him. Two headlines on a story in Saturday's MetroNews section said
he committed suicide.
Correction published Sunday, October 30, 1995.
